“Why isn’t my webpage showing up in Google?” is one of the most common questions we get asked. So when I came across this guide from SEOmoz, I just had to share it with you.

Have you got 10 minutes to spare today? According to Dr. Pete at SEOmoz, 10 minutes is all it takes to work out why your page is missing from Google.

Here is a breakdown of the tasks in 10 minutes so you can follow along:

0:00-0:30 – Confirm the site is indexed with a Google site: command search.

If your website is within the results from the search, then it is indexed in Google and you have nothing to worry about.

0:30-1:00 – Confirm the page is not indexed with a Google site: command search.

It’s time to check the specific page in question. If the page doesn’t show any results, then narrow down the search to the next level (/folder in the above example.)

1:00-1:30 – Confirm the page is not ranking through an exact match search of your title tag.

1:30-2:00 – Check for bad Robots.txt
Assuming you site is being indexed, but your particular webpage isn’t, it might be time to check your title tags to ensure your not accidently blocking search spiders.

2:00-2:30 – Check for META Noindex in the header of your HTML source code.
Avoid accidental blocking of the Google spider by ensuring that your META data doesn’t look like this:

2:30-3:00 – Check for a bad Rel=Canonical tag
The problem comes when you canonicalize too narrowly. Let’s say for example, that every page on your site had a canonical tag with the URL “www.example.com” – Google would take that as an instruction to collapse your entire search index down to just ONE page.

3:00-4:00 – Check for bad header/redirects (such as 404 or 301/302)
In some cases, a page may be returning a bad header, error code (404, for example) or poorly structured redirect (301/302) that’s preventing proper indexation. You’ll need a header checker for this – there are plenty of free ones online (try HTTP Web-Sniffer).

4:00-5:00 – Check for cross-site duplication
Although you might share content across multiple sites, once Google detects these duplicates, it’s probably going to pick one and ignore the rest.

5:00-7:00 – Check for internal duplication

7:00-8:00 – Review anchor text quality for uncommon keyword combination or unnatural repetition

One pretty easy to spot problem is when you have a pattern of suspicious anchor text – usually, an uncommon keyword combination that dominates your inbound links. What you’re looking for is a pattern of unnatural repetition. Let’s say, though, that 70% of our links pointing back to SEOmoz had the anchor text “Danny Dover Is Awesome.” That would be unnatural. If Google thinks this is a sign of manipulative link building, you may see that target page penalized.

8:00-10:00 – Review link profile quality

I would suggest checking out Dr. Pete’s full article here, it goes into a lot more detail and includes specific examples and tools to help in your page indexing audit.

If you find that your site isn’t included in Google, then your first step is to get it included. Our G-Boost service can now get your site listed in Google in just 48 hours.

By now you all know that SEM is about getting people to visit your website. But how do you get visitors to take a second or third click on your website and explore it further.

By now you all know that SEM is about getting people to visit your website. But how do you get visitors to take a second or third click on your website and explore it further.

I have outlined a few tips to help you in this area. This includes:

Ensure your keywords match your website content

There is nothing worse than clicking on a website from the SERP’s and finding that the website has nothing to do with what you are looking for. Make sure your website content is relevant to what your searchers are looking for; otherwise you will see them disappear very quickly.

Does your page load fast enough?

We’ve spoken of the importance of this previously and considering it is now also one of Google’s factors to determine ranking, it might be time to look at it closely. If your webpage takes longer than 10 seconds to load, then it’s highly likely your visitors will become impatient and leave. Remember: there are millions of sites on the internet that they could visit over yours. Rather than wait for your site; they will simply try the next listing in the SERP.

Location, location, location

It’s no use getting visitors to your site, then expecting them to trawl through your site to find what they are looking for. Put the most popular links and call to action buttons on your site in the ‘best real estate’ of your pages (close to the top and towards the left of the screen).

Turn off the music and video

I must admit this is my biggest turnoff when visiting a website (and it makes me leave ASAP). Music and videos (or the little customer service representative in the bottom corner of the screen) can be very annoying if set to auto play. If you have an auto play feature set on your website, then I would suggest checking how many visitors leave within the first three seconds of your music or video playing. I think you will be surprised by the results.

So, if your visitors don’t seem to be sticking around on your site, these four tips might just help you solve the problem.

Should you optimize for Facebook?

Should you optimize for Facebook? Can you improve Google search results with Facebook SEO?

At the 2009 MIMA Summit I gave a presentation on the intersection of SEO and Social Media suggesting that companies become publishers in their marketing and that the opportunity for search doesn’t just lie with Google, but also with social search. At the time, Facebook’s internal search emerged as one of the search engine engines tracked by comScore. The idea being marketers can optimize their website content for standard search but also the content they publish within social networks and on social media content sites.

Fast forward to today: comScore’s June 2010 U.S. Search Engine Rankings report shows that Facebook search queries have grown from 395 million in January of 2010 to 621 million queries in June. That’s almost half the monthly queries reported for Bing (1.7 billion) but not anywhere near the 10 billion plus queries on Google.

With over 500 million registered users worldwide, Facebook still presents an opportunity for marketers to better connect their social content with searchers through optimization. The optimization and search visibility opportunity with Facebook comes in two forms:

Facebook hosted pages ranking well in external search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing.

Content that can be displayed in the search results from Facebook’s internal search engine such as Facebook hosted pages, Facebook Questions and web pages served up through Facebook’s search results partner, Bing.

What to expect from Facebook Search:

Facebook internal search will show a mix of results from your Facebook network or other Facebook content like apps or groups, off-Facebook web pages and with the launch of Facebook Questions, might send you to Questions pages others have created. If the query reflects a question where none exists, it might prompt you to create one. To segment the the type of Facebook content that’s searched, you need to use the search page, which interestingly does not allow you to filter by Questions.

Here are several tips to better understand what you can optimize for better search performance with Facebook content:

On Page Facebook SEO:

Pick your page name and vanity URL wisely. Use keywords in the “about” box when you write your description of the page as well as in the Overview section of the info tab. Also, take advantage of FBML (Facebook Markup Language) to add custom content (text, images and links) that can includ relevant keywords that work together with your other keyword use.

When adding content like photos, discussion topics and status updates, think of keywords in titles when appropriate. Whenever you create a unique page on Facebook such as a discussion topic on a Fan page, there is an opportunity to implement most of the standard SEO tactics you would use with a web page. If permissions allow, external sites can link to the discussion page, helping it to rank well in standard search engines outside of Facebook.

The newest opportunity to create content on Facebook that shows prominently in Facebook search results are Questions. Be thoughtful about keywords as you title your Facebook Question and the description. The more likes you get for your Question, the more like-ly it will show in search results, so make it interesting, descriptive, interactive (add a poll) and promote it to your network. You could also ask and answer your own questions.

As for getting your website’s pages into Facebook search results, Bing is the gatekeeper. Facebook search results for out of network web pages are provided by Bing so inclusion in Bing is a necessity.

You can incorporate Facebook Open Graph protocol into your website and add a Like button to web pages for things like movies, sports teams, celebrities, and restaurants but there are many other types supported. Basically, this is a set of meta tags that you’d add to the template or source code of your site. Jesper Astrom offers his thoughts on how to get indexed and rank in Facebook Search here that explains how the meta data plus the signal of Likes performed by readers of your web page content can influence rankings on Facebook.

Off Page Facebook SEO:

Get links to your fan page or any other public pages from relevant, external web sites. That could be your blog or other social profiles as well as author bios or wherever it makes sense to link to your Facebook Fan page. You can also attract links to your page by attracting more fans/likes. Each like is a link or vote for your page, so be sure to give them a reason to “like” your content.

It is not the nominal number of fans on a page or in a group that makes your page rank. It is the social closeness of the page to the searcher that makes it rank. This means you shouldn’t spend all your money becoming number one. But you should spend your money on acquiring the right people to put you as number one, making you show up to all their friends and friends of friends when they search on related topics to you.

Amongst all the things you could be spending your digital marketing time on, does it make sense to focus SEO efforts solely on Facebook? I agree with David Harry, and would say probably not.

However, companies that have already committed to improving search performance of their web content on standard search engines and who are actively building a community on Facebook would do well to understand the additional opportunities for reach afforded by Facebook SEO. In other words, if you’re already under the hood, why not make sure you gain Facebook search benefits too?

The TITLE tag is the most important tag. Ask someone NOT involved with your site to review your title. Is your title what they would be searching for?

Build your site based upon what people are looking for, NOT the other way around.

Clarify your business goal, brand objective and value proposition. These are extremely difficult to do, but essential to your success. Answer these first!

Make sure what is ranking for any given keyword is relevant and not a 404 or non-related page. We’ve all seen these pop up in the serps.

Solve a problem for your customer. Make sure the page does this with proper SEO and a call to action. It comes down to answering user questions.

Don’t put SEO front and center. Ditch the the huge list of links. Good SEO is unseen and should be an invisible layer. Make the best user experience, then leverage SEO.

Give the SEO team the power to do things.

Give the SEO team their own development resources (This is my FAVORITE!).

Make SEO part of the work flow, but don’t bring it into the development cycle too early. However, make the SEO team aware of product and value development as they progress.

Great content + Great User Experience + SEO = Traffic
